My American Dream
Introduction
My name is Stephan Tjiook, and I am a 25-year old dental student in my final year at the Academic Centre for Dentistry Amsterdam (ACTA). Since I started my study in 2010, my ultimate dream has been to enrich my vision of dentistry by studying abroad.
This would be preferably in a city which I have always dreamed of visiting, but until now have never been. The place that meets these criteria is New York City, The City That Never Sleeps. And of course: if you say NYC, you think Columbia University.
A city which I have always dreamed of visiting, but until now have never been.
I’m absolutely convinced an internship at Columbia University will help me to further develop my skills and grow as a dental student as well as a person.

With parents who both worked as dentists, my interest in dentistry began at a very young age. To this day, I am grateful that my parents encouraged me to develop my interests in their field of profession. Without hesitation, I would say that I absolutely enjoy studying in the field of dentistry and my time at ACTA.

As a student who likes to broaden his horizons, I have and am doing a lot of work for several organizations and initiatives in and outside of ACTA. I am excited to finally try to fulfill my dreams by applying for an internship in New York City, at your beautiful Columbia University.
Columbia University, New York
Having already finished my scientific master thesis in Amsterdam, I’m aiming for this internship to obtain a good view of the American culture and vision of dentistry, mainly by attending courses and observing the clinical patient treatments at several dental departments within your university during these two months.
And of course: if you say NYC, you think Columbia University.

Creative. Driven. Passionate.
I consider myself to be a creative, driven and passionate student who likes to push his boundaries. After hearing some amazing stories about your university from colleagues like Tessa van Ligten, Yu Lin Loo, Vincent Lim, Corien Pronk and Iris de By, I’m absolutely convinced an internship at Columbia University will help me to further develop my skills and grow as a dental student as well as a person.
